I caught the beginning of Lord Carter’s address on Delivering Digital Britain.
The salient points were on the development of infrastructure and the need to transfer services from analogue to digital.
He also raised the issue of the early investors of the internet retaining they’re market share whilst addressing the Digital Inclusion Agenda in terms of the individuals and groups of society who do not have equity of access.
Other than that I haven’t had a lot of time to see the ruminations from this address. I’ll be following the forum and following the #tagging on twitter of the subject
n.b #tagging is a means to search themes on twitter. Inputting ‘#’ then relevant search term - like ‘#carter’ will show all comments on this subject that have been #tagged on the word.
One of the relevancies for us (those in mental health) is that Delivering Digital Britain is focusing on the next generation of user. That means anyone - you, mh services users, your parents - basically those getting online at this point. Online community is still young. Looking at community development in it’s early stage means that those with community building knowledge and skills - like the Community Development Workers are very well placed to join the conversation and use their real world knowledge to ensure the healthy, inclusive development of the ‘hard to reach groups’ in the Digital Britain vision. It’s also an opportunity to see change in action. As time passes models of practice become entrenched and harder to change. To put it another way. Early Intervention and Preventative opportunities are now available.
