I was shown Google Earth again this weekend.
It’s moved on a lot since I last looked. There are some Google cars out on the road snapping the environment. This is what they are doing with the results. Designing a 3d map. The detail is being built on and improved continuously.
Above is a youtube clip that shows world monuments.Looking at it, it struck me of the amount of times I have heard over the last few years just how useful a mapping of the mental health services in the city would be. Something that showed them physically in relation to each other but also the kind of service and who could access it.
At some point in the near future the detail of Google Earth may well be at a level to pinpoint Touchstone’s offices or the Becklin Centre in 3d imagery. They accept user submissions via Sketchup, a 3D modeling system and I see no reason why a connection of networks linking each building as a mental health service can’t be incorporated (I haven’t figured out quite how yet, but give me time - I’ve only been thinking about it for four days)
This would allow for a 3d mapping of local services along with information about access, sector and referral. Well. This is my theory anyway.
And possibly a future project…
