Unknown unknowns: assessing media futures «
“If we are to facilitate innovation in the media, we need a clear understanding of the forces and dynamics that shape it and the relationship of media, technology and society in general. Today we also need to interrogate the widely held view that technology drives business and society, and that progress is linear and inevitable. We might even question the revolutionary hype around the media itself.”
Dr Brian Winston
and this is my point. If we accept that media is a powerful force on society as a whole - where are we, those active in mental health? Do we have an understanding that how we individually engage with media is as impactful as large campaigns such as Time for Change I noted in my last blog? are we able to allow the process of thinking differently and thereby utilsing Web2.0 in our day to day life and work as a means to work towards recovery? Do we understand that Web2.0 like Talking Therapy can be an effective tool if used well and with relevance?
If at this point in history the work around how media, Web2.0 and emerging Web3.0 is being done to look at how this is shaping and being shaped is is not vital that we take the opportunity now to set the mental health and recovery agenda? There is a taking responsiblity needed from us to ensure that it is on the map. And we have the opportunity to do so. Now.
